Willy Wonka for Halloween

I've always enjoyed the concept of highly detailed and accurate costumes. This crap they sell on the market for $15 that includes the shirt, hat, boot covers, and a laser gun all in one package might fly for less detail-oriented folks or people short on time, but I'm a big fan of authenticity.

The problem is, I generally end up being one of the "short on time" crowd, so I half-ass myself a costume at the last minute involving a quick trip to the military surplus store and a liberal application of creativity involving everyday household items. Halloween shows up altogether too quickly and the night before I'm cobbling something together. It kills me, too - I'd like to have something better than that. If I'm going as Dracula, I want a pair of custom fangs and a high-quality cape. I have yet to be a Ghostbuster because I need accurate props with real working electronics.

This year I'm taking the project on early, though: I'm going to be Willy Wonka (from the new movie).

Jenn and I went last night to the fabric store and I ended up picking up three patterns - one for a coat (which will need to have the collar slightly modified); one for a shirt (I'll have to find some paisley fabric); and one for a civil war jacket which, once the sleeves and collar are removed, looks just like his vest. I've also purchased some finials that can be used as the handle on his walking stick and I've ordered some clear PVC pipe for the body of it.

I'm getting a head start so I can actually make all this stuff and go for the authentic look. Now, admittedly, I'm already conceding a few of the details. I won't be able to get the "W" pin he has at his collar. I'm not a good enough tailor to make a coat that has pinstripes that match up so I'm going to go with a solid color instead. The shoes probably won't be quite right, and the bottom of the pants (if I go with a pair I have already) won't be right, either. And I can't find the actual finial that was on his cane, nor can I find quite the right tip for it, either, but we'll make due. Oh, and there's no way I'm springing for a real top hat. The point is, it'll be of a much higher quality (and will be much more fun) than the $15 kit.

Of course, the patterns already cost me $25, the finials were $15, and the PVC pipe was $30 with shipping (it only comes in 10' sections). So budget-wise, I'm way over the typical Halloween costume budget already. It'll be fun to make, though, and I think that's really what matters. Plus I'll be happier with it when it's done. I'll keep you posted.

UPDATE 10/02/05: The costume came out well. Here are the details.

I stumbled across your blog when I was googling for patterns for Wonka-like collars (and struck out) and wanted to share one suggestion regarding the "W" pin. I ended up searching ebay and found a decorative "M or W" pin, all scripty and shiny. it isn't exact, but it's close enough and looks good. Eventually I'll try my hands at casting a real one, but for this round of my costume, it'll work fine.

now, that's what i call a right approach!!! i am so glad i found your blog. i also plan to make a Willy Wonka costume for Halloween and I already bought black glasses, as seen in the film.
Do you have any suggestions for the fabrics for the deep-red coat and the shirt? I am new in America and don't even know where to buy stuff like that. Are there some magazines dedicated to making costumes?

Redballs (www.redballs.com) makes a great red Wonka jacket (they also have a black version, if you're interested). I've found that Hot Topic (www.hottopic.com and their stores in malls) sells them. The problem is that, for me, I need a 2XL in that coat (my shoulders are too broad for the XL but the rest is fine), and they don't have any 2XL in the red Wonka jacket left.

I contacted Redballs and, while they were very responsive and friendly, they were unable to hook me up, so I'll be making my jacket.

There are lots of local fabric stores you can go to for patterns and fabric.

I'll continue updating the blog with my progress as the costume gets completed.

Ironically, I also found this blog while googling for a Willy Wonka costume. The only difference is...I'm a woman.

I'm not usually picky about costume details. But my friend suggested that she and I dress up as Veruca Salt and Willy Wonka for the Halloween Masquerade. I can pull it off, too, with a few adjustments...but I've discovered the hard way that finding the right materials for the costume is darn near impossible.

For one, since I'm in Canada, it's hard to find the right coat without ordering it online. And I can't order it anywhere online that isn't American, so it's going to cost me more than $100 for just the red velvet jacket. On top of that, I've already spent $110 on the cane, hat, goggles, chain, pants (I don't own any black ones) make-up, shoes and gloves. This is turning out to be a very expensive project.

Here's a suggestion for the gloves that worked for me: buy some normal, household laytex gloves from your nearest Walgreens...or other pharmacy/drug store. Then get some Sharpies markers, preferrably purple. Then colour the laytex gloves with the markers. It works, but the markers must be permanent or it comes off. The results are quite remarkable (no pun intended) As for the "W" emblem, I'm not even trying. I'm just making it out of cardboard and colouring it silver with another marker. Heh.

But I guess I still have 30 days, so I won't panic...yet.

I ended up asking my dentist for gloves - he had the purple ones - and I got two pair from him. Your local dentist or doctor also might have them for the asking.

I sympathize with the cost. The total on my costume came to almost $275. Willy's an expensive guy to dress like. If it turns out it'll all be worth it, though, right?

Yes, but I'm a student, unfortunately. I probably won't see a dentist for a few months and my family dentist lives several hundred miles away. I'll have to stick with my marker gloves, sadly. I looked at your list of materials and I'm rather shocked at the prices myself. Some of the things you have cost way less than I had to pay, and others way more. Worse, I pay Canadian dollars. See here:

Jacket (not acquired yet): $95 Cdn. + $18 shipping.
Pants: $20
Shirt/vest: $12
Hat: $45
Goggles: $25
Makeup: $4.50
Hair: $7.00 (estimate)
Cane: (look-alike)$22
Dress-shirt material: $14
Shoes: $22
Chain: $2.50

Total: $287 (Cdn.)

Technically, it won't cost as much as yours, but then it won't be as authentic, either. Getting materials for anything is a hassle for me. My cane doesn't look anything like it, except the general shape. It's black with a plain spherical handle. I also need to buy an additional item, which involves my being female instead of male. How uncomfortable this will be...(sigh).

But that's true. It will all be worth it come the time to dress up, and chances are this costume will last me several years before I decide to switch to another theme.

Does anyone know where I can purchase some sort of black vest for a men's Wonka costume? I really don't know how to sew (and naturally, don't have a sewing machine). Google searches for every variation of vest turns out nothing. In terms of the clothing, that seems to be my hurdle.

Thanks!

I ended up having to sew one because I couldn't find one I liked. You might be able to find a black chef's coat and tear the sleeves off (I think the style was a lot like that) but that would still involve hemming the sleeves unless you kept the long coat on the whole time to cover the raw vest sleeve hole edges.

You also might want to try taking a photo to a suit shop (The Men's Wearhouse, for example) - they might be able to point you to something similar or custom tailor you something.

Im making my costume also. The "W" pin on the coller, I made by cutting it out of steel with a plasma cutter. Now I just have to smooth it out. I got the redballs coat, which is actually really nice. I got a black vest, shirt, and pants from the good will. Cost me about $10. The cane is coming along awsome! I got some clear PVC. I found the finals from Lowes for $6. I made a template on the computer, and owning a vinyl graphics business, made a template for the swirls, cut it, put it on, painted it, and the clearcoated it. THe finals are a little different, but I like the look.
